Russian Activities with Japan
Russia took over some of the Kurile Islands of Japan around the latter part of the 1700’s. Russia’s Possessions in Asia, her colony at Sitka on American territory and her occupation of the Kurile Islands placed her on every side of Japan but the south1. If Russia could take over Japan, it could have made her a super power in the Pacific, which could have enabled her to control the growing commerce of Asia. The Japanese were aware of Russia’s intentions as it was seen in ziogoon’s reply to the Resanoff, “ that Russia’s efforts to have alliance and commerce with Japan, proves that 'Russia has a strong inclination for Japan.'”1. Later on during 1804, Russia tried to start trading with Japan, but Japan refused to trade with Russia.2
